A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Natural Resources, financials, gaming and housing are leading as the market rotates away from AI hardware, while semiconductors are the clear laggard after Tuesday’s profit-taking.

Investment Digest

The thematic tape is mixed ahead of the FOMC decision, with futures slightly higher but the market still digesting Tuesday’s rotation out of semiconductors, memory and software following a sharp three-day AI rebound. The broader backdrop remains supportive enough for cyclicals and financials, with the Dow at a new high, crude sharply lower after the Iran MOU, and Treasuries stable, but the market is also waiting for Chair Warsh’s first press conference and updated Fed projections. The key tactical issue is whether the Fed validates the rate-relief narrative created by lower oil, or pushes back with a higher-for-longer message and less forward guidance. AI remains structurally intact, but the latest tape shows investors taking profits in the most crowded semiconductor sleeves while adding selectively to financials, housing, metals/miners, water and other non-AI cyclicals.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a clear rotation away from the AI hardware complex. GDX led the 1D tape with a 2.31% gain, followed by SILJ up 1.99%, KBWB up 1.61%, BJK up 1.56% and XHB up 1.39%. Housing and financials are notable because both benefited from the lower-rate backdrop and improving risk appetite, while metals/miners bounced despite still-weak monthly returns in several Natural Resources exposures. The bottom of the tape was entirely semiconductor-driven: SOXX fell 5.92%, XSD declined 5.73%, SOXQ lost 5.71%, FTXL dropped 5.61% and PSI fell 5.05%. Flows still show that investors have not abandoned the AI trade: SOXX attracted $3.87B over 1M and $6.68B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.98B over 1M and $6.07B YTD. However, the daily performance data make clear that the most visible AI hardware ETFs are being used as a source of funds after the recent rally. Broader flows remain constructive, led by $8.79B of 1M inflows into VTI, $8.47B into SPY, $5.61B into VTV, $3.87B into SOXX and $3.80B into QQQ. The largest 1M outflows were EFV at $(5.44B), ARKK at $(5.41B), GLD at $(3.53B), KWEB at $(1.04B) and ARKQ at $(942.48M).

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to keep the AI trade in the portfolio, but reduce the most crowded semiconductor beta until the FOMC and post-Iran-deal rotation settle. SOXX and SMH still have strong YTD inflows and positive 1M returns, but the latest daily losses show that investors are actively harvesting gains after the sharp rebound. The better near-term setup is a barbell of core AI infrastructure and software exposure on one side, with financials, housing, select materials and dividend/value exposure on the other. Stay underweight broad disruptive technology, China internet, gold-linked funds, small-cap beta and the most extended semiconductor ETFs until rates, Fed guidance and breadth improve.
