Theme Signal
Biotechnology, cannabis, banks and defense themes are leading as the tape broadens away from semiconductors, while hydrogen, AI infrastructure and semiconductor ETFs lag on renewed AI/momentum pressure.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is more defensive after semiconductors and AI-linked momentum weakened again, even as Thursday’s broader tape showed healthier participation from healthcare, financials, small caps and other non-tech leadership. The latest trading updates point to a market still supported by the AI compute and capex demand narrative, but increasingly sensitive to valuation, very high earnings bars, profit-sharing headlines out of South Korea, Anthropic’s warnings around powerful models, and the fact that many post-close tech reports traded lower despite beat-and-raise results. The positive development is that the semiconductor pullback has not yet translated into a broad market breakdown: Thursday’s session featured a broadening trade, the DJIA hit a new all-time high, healthcare and financials led, and lower oil/rates helped stabilize risk sentiment. However, Friday’s futures weakness, renewed tech pressure across Asia, a softer crypto tape, the mega-IPO supply debate, private-credit scrutiny and the May employment report all argue for a more disciplined tactical posture. The preferred lens is not to abandon AI infrastructure, but to reduce the most crowded semiconductor beta and lean into themes where breadth, flows and recent earnings support are improving.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show a sharp rotation into biotech, cannabis and financials. LABU led the 1D tape with an 8.32% gain, followed by MSOS up 7.59%, ARKG up 6.93%, CNBS up 6.54% and MJ up 5.12%. Cannabis strength looks like a high-beta rebound rather than durable leadership, with MJ still down 0.23% over 1M and YOLO down 0.55%, while biotech is more mixed, with ARKG up 18.61% over 1M but LABU still down 3.69%. Financials also participated strongly below the top-five cutoff, with KBWB up 3.65% and IAT up 3.63%, consistent with Thursday’s broader rotation into banks and other non-tech leadership. The weakest themes were concentrated in prior AI-adjacent winners: HYDR fell 3.90%, TCAI declined 2.45%, BAI lost 2.36%, FTXL fell 2.24% and SHOC also declined 2.24%. Semiconductor one-month returns remain powerful, with SOXX up 30.44%, SOXQ up 29.27%, FTXL up 27.66% and SMH up 23.82%, but the daily weakness reinforces the need to manage crowding and high-bar earnings risk. Flows remain supportive of broad beta and software, led by SPY with $11.63B of 1M inflows, QQQ with $8.61B, VTI with $6.24B, SCHD with $2.95B and IGV with $2.27B, while 1M outflows are concentrated in EFV at $(3.68B), IWM at $(1.96B), GLD at $(1.45B), SMH at $(1.35B) and MTUM at $(515.39M).
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to maintain AI exposure, but reduce the most crowded semiconductor and momentum sleeves while the market broadens into healthcare, financials and selected cyclicals. Semiconductors remain strategically important, with SOXX, SOXQ, FTXL and SMH still carrying strong 1M returns, but SMH’s $(1.35B) of 1M outflows and the latest weakness in FTXL, SHOC, SOXQ, SOXX and SMH show investors are actively trimming the crowded AI-hardware trade. Software remains a better flow-confirmed core exposure, with IGV attracting $2.27B over 1M and $7.44B YTD, even though it also needs to digest recent gains. The preferred posture is overweight quality software, cybersecurity, selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, healthcare innovation and financials, while treating cannabis and levered biotech as tactical rebounds and staying underweight flow-negative Natural Resources, broad small-cap beta, and the most crowded AI/momentum ETFs until payrolls, rates and earnings reactions stabilize.
